Miami, FL - March 3, 2023 - AIRIE.Foundation, the South Florida-based non-profit organization that empowers artists to think critically about their relationship to the environment, announces that the “Passages” installation will be presented at the 2023 Aspen Ideas: Climate Conference in Miami Beach March 6-9, 2023.

“Passages,” curated by AIRIE.Foundation Creative Director and 2022 fellow Cornelius Tulloch reveals connections that the 2022 fellows found or created in the Everglades and celebrates the stories of this natural landscape. In addition to Tulloch, participating fellows include Arsimmer McCoy and Kunya Rowley in addition to filmmaker Alexa Caravia, and editor Justin Matousek. 

The Passages installation made its public debut during AIRIE.Foundation’s Art and Environment Summit last December during Miami Art Week.  Tulloch was selected by the City of Miami Beach and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs to present “Passages” at this year’s Aspen Ideas: Climate as part of a series of temporary site-specific public art commissions, film screenings, and performances highlighting issues related to climate change and sea level rise.

“We are thrilled that the AIRIE.Foundation Art + Environment Summit Passages Installation will be shown at the Aspen Ideas Climate conference,” said Evette Alexander, AIRIE.Foundation’s executive director. “Art has the power to transcend language and cultural barriers, inspiring people to connect with the world around them in a way that science alone cannot. By harnessing the creativity and imagination of artists, we can catalyze the collective action necessary to combat climate change and protect our planet for generations to come."

In this iteration, the work aims to create heightened visibility and a voice for the “River of Grass” and the stories it holds. “Passages,” asks who tells the stories of a landscape and its overlooked communities. By offering a place to contemplate the Black history of the Everglades, Tulloch, and other AIRIE.Foundation fellows, look at the threats climate change and urban development pose to this area extending to the marginalized communities of south Florida and the indigenous communities and wildlife of the region. 

Passages will be on view March 6-9th at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Hall B.
